Inspiration To Give You Power to Rise Above Workplace Bullying

Do you ever have an insight that is more than information?  It becomes inspiration to allow you the implementation.  It’s a pivotal shift that allows you the confidence to leave your past behind, with the promise of a new future.  For the past four years, I have dedicated this blog to being one that was well researched, and loaded with information and tips on how to stop workplace bullying.  We’ve received many emails from people all over the world who have benefited greatly.

I do know there are still people that, while they have received the information, they might still be stuck. That’s why today’s message is different:  I would like to share with you more personally.  So you know that you are not alone…

I have two specific suggestions for people wanting a pivotal shift to move off center:

#1. EMDR Therapy:

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing  is a psychotherapy treatment that was originally designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories.  After successful treatment with EMDR, affective distress is relieved, negative beliefs are reformulated, and physiological arousal is reduced.  During EMDR the client attends to emotionally disturbing material in brief sequential doses while simultaneously focusing on an external stimulus.

The number of sessions depends upon the specific problem and client history.  However, repeated controlled studies have shown that a single trauma can be processed within 3 sessions in 80-90% of the participants.  While every disturbing event need not be processed, the amount of therapy will depend upon the complexity of the history.  In a controlled study, 80% of multiple civilian trauma victims no longer had PTSD after approximately 6 hours of treatment.  A study of combat veterans reported that after 12 sessions 77% no longer had post traumatic stress disorder.  I would encourage you to research this further by going to www.emdr.com.

#2. Emotions Anonymous:

As with any 12 –Step program, the process and program are excellent for helping people to ‘move through’ emotional situations with support, a system and sustainability.  Google EA in your area. They are often one hour meetings and it is based in a safe environment with no judgment.  The program has been around since 1936 all over the world.  Why would you go? A 12 Step program basically exists for anyone who has a situation that has ‘power over’ themselves.  If you feel your emotions are up and down, I’d highly suggest this support group for anyone.  The cost is nominal often in the $2-$3 dollar range.

Being plugged into a system of support is vital if you are currently going through a bullying situation, or have in the past.  I’d encourage you to take the step in researching these two areas to gain the qualified support you deserve.

PS:  One more piece of Inspiration! Bill 168, which amends Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act with respect to violence and harassment in the workplace, passed third reading yesterday.   It is anticipated that it will receive Royal Assent in the next couple of days.   It will come into force 6 months after it receives Royal Assent.

Once in force, the legislative changes will impose several obligations on employers to conduct risk assessments, and develop and implement policies and programs, in an effort to reduce the incidents of violence and harassment in the workplace.

I got your book over a year ago. I have been working in a very difficult environment. I finally turn in my time. The Human Resource Department has been no help. I have went to them at least 5 time. I have even had discussion with HR and the bully. I would like to do something before I leave to expose this person but I don’t know what. I only have about 3 weeks but the bully still finds the need to leave me out of the work flow. But I know that when I am gone the other people I work with will have to endure her need to bully. Thank you for your book and news letters. If you have any advice I would appreciate it.

Thank you so much for your newsletters. They are informative and a “lifeline” for a group of us here at work in Pretoria, South Africa.

Can you please not forward the newsletters to me until the week of 4 January 2010? I will be on leave.

In addition, would it be possible if you could address racism in the workplace? The white people here are by far in the minority. We are shouted at, sworn at, etc. on a daily basis. (It is definitely a pattern of blacks harrassing the whites.) Since this is South Africa, we really have nowhere to go for protection from this type of bullying. We really need some help in this problem!

    kind regards,

    Carolyn Crawford

    Hi Valerie,

Alberta needs legislation in this area – badly.
Our province is permeated with workplace bullying mentality; it is practically considered a positive quality for those “climbing the ladder”. Unfortunately our current provincial government has been in power so long they have relied on this as a means of self-protection and holding onto control. Hopefully we can get a change of government and see some progress in this area. Most workers in this province remain completely unprotected as the grounds covered under human rights do not touch regular abuse and bullying.

    Hi Everyone

I thought many times to go on Oprah before she leaves next year in September. At the time, I didn’t know what workplace harassment and bullying meant with the administration’s blessing. Now, I do know. I learned it from this site and all I know is that I was working among crocodiles, if I have to use an analogy. The problem is that although it happened two years ago, I got very ill as a result of it; my heart gave in, and I am still battling the war. I am still ill and not ready to go to work, because even the thought of it makes me ill again. On the other hand, I am not getting any younger. My abusers are those who scream the most that they are harassed around the globe when in fact they are the harassers. Thank you for your input.

Thank you everyone for your comments. Bill 168 is for Ontario only. Quebec and Saskatchewan have laws, the rest of Canada does not. In the USA, there are currently no laws to protect one from workplace bullying although some have attempted. Perhaps a different approach must be used. It is likely this will go throughout Canada in the next few years and we’ll join progressive countries such as the Scandinavian countries in their outreach.

Yes! Oprah would be a good thing to do! I’d be happy to help!

  12. L says:

Thanks for this. Now if the USA also gets some laws to protect us against workplace bullies – then things will be better here too. I am better at recognizing a bully now. I recently watched a show Tabitha’s Salon Makeover – in which Nikki a salon owner – was obviously a bully – I knew it as soon as she opened her mouth! I watched the whole show – thinking – she will not change – and she didn’t. I had never even heard of workplace bullying before my experience – most people don’t see this as a real problem – they just think it is something the victims are doing to cause it.

Thank you Valarie – I hope you soon get the recognition you deserve – I keep trying to let Oprah know she needs to have a show about workplace bullying – and you should defintely be on the show to tell what you know.

i was wondering if bill 168 applies to all of canada or just ontario. how about british columbia do we have anything in place for bullying in the work place. i will look into the EMDR therapy as the bullying in our facility is still going on strong, there is the chosen few girls that have hurt many people including me and also a bully boss that refuses to deal with the problem.

  14. Dee says:

How does EMDR work? Is it possible to practice it on yourself?

  15. Mary says:

    Dear Valerie

I never heard of EMDR Therapy before, and I am sure glad of Bill-168. Thank you for the tips.

    Sincerely

    Mary
